Propagation

Propagation is about starting new plants for your garden, for Indoors or to give to friends.  Plants can be started from seeds of clones (cuttings).

There are many different techniques of propagation for different species.  We can only give general guidelines that will be suitable for a wide range of plants.  The approach to propagation outlined here is based on the latest current commercial practices.  It is intended as an introduction to the most up to date professional techniques such as the use of Rockwool and hormone gels.

Rockwool propagation cubes are ideal for starting larger plants such as tomatoes, for instance, because they allow the grower to sort through the young plants and select the best for planting.  Rockwool takes a little getting used to but we recommend that you persevere because once you have mastered the technique, you will have a very useful skill and unlimited supply of new plants whenever you want them.

There are several types of Rockwool designed for propagation of seeds and cuttings.

Best for the home grower is the Single Block System also known as SBS.  RockWool SBS consists of small individual cubes or mini blocks of RockWool in a plastic tray, contained within its own compartment.  Each mini block is separated from the others so the roots of the new plant cannot invade the other blocks.  These SBS have become widely used the world over.

The beauty of using rockwool ensures uniform results.  Once you have the hang of using Rockwool you will get consistent, predictable result and endless supply of new plants from seeds or clones.

More recently rockwool cubes are being challenged by a new innovative product called root riot cubes these are very similar to rockwool but crucially they come pre soaked cutting out the need to balance the inital EC or pH so they are perfect for the novice and the professionals and we have both on our shelves for you to try.
