Dangers of using a segment timer to run my Lights?

High Intensity Discharge lighting draws a large amount of power when turned on to ignite the lamp as it has inside two electrodes, which have to create an arc to fire up the lamp, once the lamp is ignited the power level drops again.  However, if the correct heavy duty relays are not used the risk of burning out and in some cases causing a fire.
